Save the Mounds

Chief Clayton Winneshiek of the Ho-Chunk Wazijaci addresses the assemble crowd of protesters to the bill AB-620. It proposed to give landowners the right to "investigate" ancient mounds that date back thousands of years. These investigations had no oversight, and an means could be used by the land owner. In many of the mounds the human remains interred there are often hard to find, especially with some modern devices such as ground penetrating radar. This bill was brought forth as means for some companies to declare mounds on their property to be "empty." These "empty" mounds are unprotected by current regulations which prohibit the removal of human remains from burial sites. If this bill passes it's likely in one case that a series of mounds would likely be mined out for the aggregate that lies beneath them.
